Dmitry Borisovich Kabalevsky was a prolific composer of piano music and
chamber music; many of his piano works have been performed by the likes of
Vladimir Horowitz. He is probably best known in the West for the "Comedians
Galop" from The Comedians Suite, Op. 26. In general, Kabalevsky was not as
adventurous as his contemporaries in terms of harmony and preferred a more
conventional diatonicism, interlaced with chromaticism and major-minor
interplay.

Not so long ago, Gramophone magazine asked several of
today’s leading virtuosos: who is the violinist’s violinist?
The answer was almost unequivocal: David Oistrakh, violinist,
footballer and gentleman. Growing up and thriving in
difficult and dangerous times in Stalin’s Russia, his almost
superhuman patience and poise made him an ideal recording
artist, but that consistency is no less evident in this
historical collection of live performances which have been
collected to mark the hundredth anniversary of his birth.

This 1954 film adaptation
of Boris Godunov is one of the most successful of Russian
operatic films. It deftly streamlines the story of the
Russain Tsar whose regime and life are threatened by the
false Dimitri, a pretender to the throne. Director Vera
Stroyeva's apprpach to the opera is distinctly cinematic.
Her atmospheric handling of the crowd scenes, juxtaposed
with startling close-ups, is strongly reminiscent of the
work of her celebrated predecessor, Sergei Eisenstein. The
production is dominated by Alexander Pirogov in the title
role. In the tradition of the greatest of Russian bassos,
Pirogov delivers a magnificently sung performance with a
keen dramatic edge. Georgi Nelepp as the False Dimitri and
Ivan Kozlovsky as the Simpleton add strong characterizations
to this compelling version of Mussorgsky's masterpiece.

A year after the premiere of "Raymonda" Alexander Glazunov composes a one act
ballet on plot by M. Petipa. In spite of the fact that the action of the ballet
takes place in France, music with its definitely Russian basis, is typical of
Glazunov.
Recording of the ballet "Lady-Soubrette" is the last page of the unprecedented
work — "Anthology of Russian Symphony Music", conductor Evgeni Svetlanov has
been carrying out since the very beginning of his artistic career. At first all
symphonic works by P. Tchaikovsky were recorded, the anthology was concluded
with the recording of all works of the same genre by A. Glazunov. Ardent
promoter of Russian and Soviet music Evgeni Svetlanov performed "a creative deed",
the USSR Symphony Orchestra being his true ally. Evgeni Svetlanov has been the
orchestra's chief conductor and artistic director since 1965. All his life the
musician follows his credo: "It's important to preserve the great
accomplishments of our musical culture. All the best, gained by our music of the
past should be constantly performed. These works must be a pattern the new
generation of listeners should be raised on".
