Jean Sibelius - Complete
symphonies (~1970)

Performed by the Moscow Radio-TV Great Symphony
Orchestra, conducted by Gennadi Rozhdestvensky.
There's little to no
reference to be found on this Melodiya LP boxset from the seventies,
holding all Sibelius' symphonies as performed by the Moscow Radio-TV
Great Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gennadi Rozhdestvensky, except
for some professional reviewers expressing their wish Melodiya would
re-issue the rare boxset on CD. Well, someone already did, privately,
and a wonderful rip it is. Trouffie, who made the rip, provided a
home-made booklet and originally seeded it through demonoid, states the
following.
Though it is not much
mentioned in the medias, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky is a great Sibelian (the
violin concerto with Oistrakh is an example). In spite of this, his
complete set of the seven symphonies by Sibelius is never mentioned
anywhere in the various articles comparing the different recordings of
the works, I do not undertstand why. Rozhdestvensky's conception is very
different from Karajan's, Maazel and others. In my opinion, it is more
authentic, more slavonic and more scandinavian at the same time; in one
word, more Sibelian.
These works have been recorded in the 60s-70s, and the Lps issued in the
70s. The sound is typical of the Soviet orchestras of that time. Up to
my knowledge, only the seventh symphony has been reissued on CD (Russian
Revelation), but I found nothing about the complete set. I have compiled
the symphonies on 3 discs: Cd 1: symphonies n° 1 and 4, Cd 2: symphonies
n° 2 and 3, and Cd 3: symphonies n° 5, 6 and 7.
The USSR State Radio and Television Symphony brings its signature sound,
a sound that has vanished along with the Soviet era, to Sibelius with
fascinating results, especially remarkable for the orchestra's
substantial breadth and focused, potent energy. (The dynamically
restricted recording is a somewhat limiting factor, but anyone who's
heard Russian orchestras live knows how loud they can play). The
woodwinds have a unique pungency that shades the music in unusual hues,
while the strings lay a carpet of sound whenever they play. And where
else could you hear the [7th] symphony's great trombone tune played with
such soulfulness--and schmaltzy vibrato? Rozhdestvensky molds all of
these elements into a highly satisfying performance.
'Trouffie' (who made
and originally provided this vinyl-rip)
So there you go. I guess we
owe 'Trouffie' a very, very big 'thank you' ...
