This 1973 film treatment of the ballet classic Don Quixote has a spaciousness, a freedom of movement often missing when a staged ballet production is taped for television. It captures the art of Rudolf Nureyev at the height of his powers, both as a dancer and as a choreographer. With distinguished supporting performances by Robert Helpmann and Lucette Aldous, the production balances lyric and narrative elements, wit and pathos, satire and idealism, with virtuoso solo and ensemble dancing.
Nureyev, a perfectionist, had an enormous airplane hangar in Australia transformed into a studio for the 25 days he spent dancing and shooting this episode in the crazy life of Cervantes's mock-epic hero. The routine 19th-century score by Ludwig Minkus has been modestly upgraded by conductor John Lanchbery, contributing positively to the performance's energy.

"The Pharaoh's Daughter" was the creation of the great choreographer Marius Petipa and the Italian composer Cesare Pugni. This DVD has a performance of the great ballerina from Svetlana Zakharova as Aspicia, along with Sergei Filin as Taor, and Maria Alexandrova as the slave Ramze.

 
Zakharova is one of the greatest ballerinas in the world, and in this film its shows with her impeccable technique and wonderful physique. Filin's Taor is verile and graceful, while Alexandrova shows off her dazzling ballon and precise technique. Alexandrova won the 'Golden Mask' Theatrical Prize of Russia for her performance as the Nubian slave Ramzea in "The Pharaoh's Daughter". All of the rest of the soloists give first-rate performances, particularly the 3 soloists at the start of the Act II Grand Pas d'Action, and the ballerina's variations in the Underwater scene.

The Fountain of Bakhshiserai, based on a Pushkin poem, is the only time Ulanova and Plisetskaya were filmed dancing together.

One of factors that contributes to the splendor of the Russian dance tradition is the quality of the acting. All the participants in the ballet fabulous actors as well as very great dancers. The scene between Ulanova and Plisetskaya is perfection.
